Wedding of Mr & Mrs McArdle with family friends the McCourts. The photograph was taken in the back yard of a house in Yorke Street, one of the oldest streets in the centre of Dundalk, County Louth. The houses were two storey stone terraced houses had outside toilets.
The bride is holding a small wedding cake. Tommy & sister Kathleen McCourt are standing in the back row. The old lady on the right is Mary McCourt. She was a formidable woman – an unofficial midwife who ‘fed half the street’. She was a keen supporter of Eamon de Valera.
The photograph was taken with a Kodak Box Brownie camera “you press the button, we do the rest’ . The box brownie made photography affordable for most people.
