This man in the photograph is Philip McGing (b. 1869), who suffered as a child from polio, resulting in a handicapped leg. He is pictured in Glenmask, Tourmakeady, County Mayo, where, unmarried, he lived with his brother Patrick’s family. The image shows a dilapidated thatched college, with a pile of stones being used as a bench/table, a bucket of water and a dog. The scene set in the image is a prime example of poverty in rural Ireland around the time of the establishment of the Irish Free State.
