What is happening in the photo?

Official military photograph of a group of non-commissioned officers from the Royal Field Artillery – 18th Brigade Division. It is unclear but it is guessed that Albert Rowe (born Ramsgate, Kent, died Dundalk 1925) is standing in the centre of the back row. Albert was stationed in the Army base at the Curragh, County Kildare. His wife Mary and children Jackie and Bertie lived with him in family accomodation. Albert went on to fight in the First World War.
