Ann’s maternal grandfather, Michael Thomas Cassidy (1875 – 1956)<br>Though born in Boston, Michael spent a good part of his childhood in Galway, as his mother returned with him after her husband was killed in an accident and her other child was drowned. In his late teens Michael returned to Boston, and joined the navy. He took part in both the Spanish American war and WW1.In the latter, despite being 6’4” he was stationed in submarines off the coast of China. <br>Married Anne Carr (from Galway) in 1925. Only child, Margaret (Ann’s mother) born 1927<br>In WW2 Michael was summoned out of retirement to assist in administration of the Charlestown navy yard – he helped to prepare young recruits – the so-called ’30 Day Wonders’. He called them the ’30-Day blunders’
